Richard Findall Crump - Purdy Mystery Grave, Mystery No More? Thanks Alan!

I received a great email from Alan concerning the Purdy Mystery Grave post.

Now that is what I am talking about people! Thanks, Alan for the GREAT detective work!!!! Maybe baby Richard can rest more in peace knowing that at least some of us know a little about him and his grave.

Hi,

Me and Russell Ingle were up there taking pictures for this week’s article, and when I ran across your website with the clear picture of the tombstone, I had to have a shot at it. I couldn’t match the engraver’s font exactly, and some of the letters were spaced and sized wrong, but I’m about 99% sure that this is accurate. The name “Findall” was hard to figure out - I kept thinking it was _ _ NDALE, but I found the name Findall Crump mentioned in some genealogy texts, so it must have been a family name. The death date and mother’s name were little more than educated guesses (I did use some census and genealogy data to make these guesses), but I think I’ve got them right. If I have all the facts straight, this would mean that the person interred in this grave is the 3-year-old son of Dr. Richard Crump. Dr. Crump later moved east and founded Crump’s Landing. Let me know what you think!

Thanks,
Alan
