Julius Hurst
I would love to talk to the family of Julius Hurst. Does anyone have any idea how I could contact them? If so, drop me an email. I know Julius was thinking of writing a book on Col. Hurst, but it didn’t happen before his passing. I would love to know where his papers are now. He would want his research to live on.
Much of the family history has been compiled by Julius Hurst, a Selmer real estate agent and former state representative who has spent a good portion of his leisure time researching, talking to old-timers and collecting letters and documents. - The Family Hurst; An Absorbing History - The Jackson Sun, Jackson, Tenn., Feb. 20, 1983

Julius Hurst passed away in November 1983, just a few months after the article you quoted was written. I’ve asked a few Hurst relatives what might have happened to his notes, but none of them knew. I’ve not followed up on it in a while, but it would be worth looking into (if he had children).
Kevin,
Can you hunt up and email the names you have sometime? I am most interested in the compass mentioned here. It’s probably sitting in someone’s attic right now somewhere.
“Horace, the grandson of David, says that other Hursts have gone on to make a name for themselves, but that Fielding is probably the most well-known. Horace has stories about how his grandfather was treated by the Union soldiers and how one of David’s sons, Chapman, probably fought on both sides of the war. Horace’s father, Elijah Stanton Hurst, born in 1855, could hear the guns from the Battle Shiloh from the family farm.
Horace, a Henderson resident, followed his father’s footsteps as a surveyor for a while and used the same compass that Fielding used. Horace says he gave the compass to Julius, who “retired it in a hardwood case lined with velvet.””
I have mailing addresses but not e-mail addresses for the Hurst descendants I talked to at my book signing in Selmer last November. I’ll e-mail them to you.
I would love to know more about this compass and its whereabouts today. Do keep me informed of any progress made on finding the notes Julius kept.
If I can assist with any research, do let me know.
Julius Hurst’s daughter Suzanne is librarian at the Selmer TN Elementary School. I do not know if she has any papers or records.
I am Julius Hurst’s granddaughter (daughter of Suzanne Hurst) and if you will email me at leannehenry@bellsouth.net I will be happy to pass along both my mother and uncle’s addresses. I know they do know quite a bit of family history although I don’t know if they have any written and unpublished documents by my late grandfather.
